Dimitri van Kampen is a visual artist. He creates abstract paintings. He works almost exclusively with oil on canvas. He is interested in reducing the relationship between paint and surface to its most elemental, without representational or prescriptive meaning. His abstract paintings often require long timelines for completion. Sometimes he paints two or three canvasses simultaneously, working alternately on them. He uses various brushes, trowels, squeegees, and pallet knives to add and remove layers of paint, occasionally interrupting the process to allow paint to dry and colour to develop. This process can take weeks to complete, during which the paintings slowly mature, revealing underlying layers, developing colours, and evolving surface textures.
